I am thinking maybe a sticky post explaining that that particular forum will now be closed to new postings, that it has outlived its usefulness and that there are many other and more efficient ways to promote one's WordPress driven site. I don't necessarily see the need to nuke what's already there; it can be archived, can it not?

A problem here perhaps, is that because such an area has existed for X
amount of time, i think it could be a little hasty of me(us, whatever)
to think removing the forum wouldn't result in some form of outcry from
the effected users (we provide something, then take it away).

It's only a few clicks, then it's gone(taking it away is simple)... but
i'd like to consider what will happen if such a change were to take
place, are we considering how users will react, as there are clear
genuine cases where honest members post links to show off their blogs,
how will those users respond.
