[wp-pro] Current Category Ancestor Class

I need a current-cat-ancestor class to be applied to list items generated
by wp_list_categories. Currently wp_list_categories only
generates current-cat and current-cat-parent classes. I
need current-cat-ancestor class applied to the next level and
beyond. WordPress adds the ancestor class for wp_list_pages and wp_nav_menu,
but unfortunately not for wp_list_categories.

Must work even if categories within the hierarchy contain no posts.

I've done a lot of searching and a bit of coding, but have not found a
solution.
