Comment (by joedolson):
I'm going to remove the accessibility focus here, as I don't see anything
in this ticket that clearly suggests an accessibility focus to these
goals. Saving space and improving the icon usage are fine, but not
relevant to accessibility. I do think that it raises at least one
potential accessibility problem, however.
- I don't agree with changing the avatar to rounded. Increasing the size
makes sense, but cropping icons frequently can lose key details, and I
don't think it's necessary. The argument that all of the other icons are
"round or icon-shaped" doesn't really work for me. "Icon-shaped" isn't
meaningful; and nothing is actually round except for the WordPress logo.
- Icon only links are difficult for voice command users. The current
avatar is intentionally using an empty alt attribute so that the visible
text is the actual command name, making it easy for a voice command user
to trigger this menu. Since this is where the 'log out' link is located,
it's actually a fairly critical menu to be able to access easily. If the
trigger only contained the gravatar, then the trigger name is masked and
difficult to discover.
