Since 6.8 the admin bar 'Edit Site' link takes users to a preview of the
homepage in the Site Editor regardless of current page context. Prior to
6.8 it opened the Site Editor in the correct template editing context
according the current page - eg when viewing a 'page', the 'single page'
template was opened for editing. This mirrored the behaviour of the 'Edit
 Page/Post' link.

I'm assuming this wasn't an intentional change as it makes little apparent
sense trigger the editing of a completely different context, and adds
considerable friction to the site building experience. There is now no way
of editing the current template with one click.
