 It is not that they are becomming more complex it is because the user base
 is becoming less technical and expect more online assistance. Years ago
 one of my plugins had a settings page with an API key and users were happy
 to read installation instructions on the read me. Today a large majority
 find that too difficult ( based on support requests ) and now they have an
 'onboarding experience' to guide them to find an API key and input that.
