 Looking at the original code comment,

 I think the intention was for the condition to hide the featured image
 when a page is assigned as the static frontpage. But in my testing, this
 has never worked, since theme version 1.1, the image always showed.
 So even if we found a way to update the condition to hide the image, it
 would be an unexpected change this long after the release of the theme.
