 Sheesh, no sooner had I posted this, than I was able to make one of the
 plugins work -- wp-supersized

 However, the bug report might still be valid, since this plugin required
 me to upload using a separate FTP client, or designate other external
 image source, and did not ask me to use WordPress to upload the image(s).
