 Got some work done at WordCamp Reno today:

 * updated to current trunk - still works!

 *  modified get_plugins() to take an alternate plugin root. I skip caching
 in that case because it doesn't seem likely to be done more than once.

 * doesn't do multiple upgrades from a zip, but that still seems within
 reach
