[wp-hackers] ALTERNATE_WP_CRON... Is it worth it?

I think Ben is talking about sites like:

Sign up and set them to fetch /wp-cron.php periodically.

But may I ask why you can't just setup a server side cron job? That 
would be ideal in this situation.
