In response to Eric and Steve, you can check out a plugin for WP that
helps you start out with custom tables if you don't want the overhead
of doing a huge ton of your own custom code.

Version 2.0 is coming out this month (beta) and even lets you create/
manage more WP objects like CPT, Taxonomies, Widgets, Shortcodes, etc..
