And, as for "Themes and Plugins  out there in use by millions of sites":
isn't that what *deprecation* is for? Certainly, a "reasonable" deprecation
period in this case would be on the order of years, rather than months. (But
then, isn't that the norm for deprecated WordPress functions?)
