This is really the point.  If there were a clean way in the UI to "remove" a plugin (a step beyond deactivating) that would be great.  I have two sites with old, no longer used plugins that are producing update nags even though they are long since not used.  It's just a PITA to have to go into an FTP program and get rid of the directory.  Would be neat to have some UI in the plugin admin interface to remove them.

Fair point for deactivated plugins, but the logic doesn't hold for "archived" plugins, assuming such an option existed. FWIW.
