Why would wp be all over your URLs? I think you're doing it wrong.

The public facing URLs are controlled by your permalink settings. Only
the backend, which presumably is not accessible to the public, has wp
in the URLs.

And for reference, you can redefine the wp-content directory all you
like as setting in the config file. That's the only forward facing URL
your users might see.
