[wp-hackers] Assigning Pages to Categories

So I'm sitting doing some WP development, and for the first time I want to assign a page to a category and use it in the Loop
but lo-and-behold I can't!  A quick search showed me that many have requested this.  I found a plugin
(http://www.stuff.yellowswordfish.com/page-category-organiser/), but don't you think this option should be in the core?
