Yes and No. You remove the need for extra entries in the table just an
extra field.

Varchar all the way - the same as the posts tables post_type (in 2.1 at
least) - if you go  down the enum route plugin's have to do table
upgrades to extend it and it gets broken by the db upgrade stuff on a
WordPress upgrade
