I would think that a compromise could be something like this:

1. Use a library like FeedCreator:

http://www.bitfolge.de/rsscreator-en.html

so that WP is relieved of the maintenance aspect.

2. Continue to generate the proper rewrite rules so that things don't  
break

3. Leave only the RSS 2 and Atom 1.0 feed <link>s in the head of the  
default template
