I checked through a few pages of posts and couldn't see any spam, so I 
guess people cleared it.

Perhaps sticter limits on number of posts / time for users < 1 month old 
would sort this?  Or cascading more restrictive limits when it's noticed 
that a user starts posting very quickly. (We could always use the 
"always trust" flag on known useful people if this causes a problem for 
genuine posters.)
