Isn't there a way to "Lock" the topic so the current content is still there, you just can't add to it or reply to what's already there? I know you can do that with SMF and other forums; seems unlikely BBPress doesn't have some similar feature.

The only downside to simply nofollow'ing links is that we leave
potentially harmful links in the forum.

If we nofollow the links, then someone still needs to check they don't
point at nasty sites, which again reintroduces the problem of needing to
moderate that forum.

You're certainly correct about closing the forum though, i can't see any
means to simply closing it from the bbPress backend, though i can't
imagine it's beyond the scope of bbPress.
