I think the Your WordPress started out as  a showcase of WP-driven sites. That was all well and good when WP wasn't the overwhelming choice of blogging and web site platform that it seems to have become.  Now there is no dearth of sites running WP out there so it's not new and unusual.  Plus if someone really wants their WP-drive site featured, there are at least a dozen sites that cater to this (e.g., welovewp.com, et al.).

It's a hard one to judge. I mean, at some point someone must have
considered the "Your WordPress" forum to be required, but now it just
seems like a big SEO grab that various folk abuse.
