Hey there,
If someone registers with a username made only of special characters (like
@- at -), their account can still be activated, but their profile link won't
work. So, when they try to do anything on their account through the
website, it won't let them. Also, other users and admins can't see their
profile properly either.
This problem also shows up in the REST API, which is like a behind-the-
scenes tool for apps to communicate with each other. Sometimes, certain
features might not work because of this issue.
One way to fix this could be to make it necessary to have at least one
letter or number in the username, or maybe just not allowing special
characters at all.
We've noticed that even in the admin section, when you try to view an
account with a username like this, the link doesn't work either.
We think there's a connection between BuddyPress and WordPress regarding
usernames, but we're not exactly sure how it works.
