 Needless to say, I am super pumped to see this being merged into core.

 One backpat-type request though: Could the core possibly:
 * Check whether https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-group-hierarchy/ is
 installed.
 * If yes, then migrate groups over to the core functionality and prompt
 admin to disable that plugin.
