 One way to look at it is:
 As soon as a person registers, they become a member of the site. AND they
 are logged into the site.

 However, access to the site is role based. Upon registration, a member
 defaults to "non activated" role. In non activated role, the member has
 limited access (or no access to) what are typically "logged in" features
 (add friend, join group, etc). However, a non activated user CAN change
 his/her own profile.

 Also, upon registration (and subsequent automatic login) the next steps
 (landing page/sequential pages) are
 1. Add photo
 2. Invite friends
 3. Enrich profile
 4. Activate account

 Once activation link is clicked, the user becomes a "normal" role user
 (whatever default role site admin has chosen for new users).

 P.S. Registration itself should ask for only 3 fields:
 Name (Display Name)
 Email
 Password
