Comment:

 It doesn't intentionally delete the last name, but if the name you put in
 doesn't contain a space, then I could imagine it might set the last name
 meta to a blank value. Can you give an example of a username that exhibits
 this behaviour? Please also let us know your versions of WordPress and
 BuddyPress.
