 Yes, that works. Is it a different core theme? I'm using a child theme of
 BPDefault. Does BuddyPress.org run as a child of BPdefault (because search
 doesn't seem to work there either..?

 About "the_excerpt", you'll need to create a plugin by hooking into the
 filters available in /buddypress/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-activity.php. It might
 be good for BP to use the_excerpt by default, but a new enhancement ticket
 should be created for that.
