 Sorry for re-opening. Can't seem to find an appropriate plugin for this,
 but I'm writing here (and re-opening) because I don't think it's a job for
 a plugin.

 IMHO, Wordpress MU should not be written in a manner that forces a
 particular protocol. Ideally it would allow for http or https depending on
 each blogs setup.
