Matt, I think it might be a security reason as well, I recently removed 
the version part from "generator" tags everywhere (incl. feeds) on my 
site due to some known vulnerabilities for the particular version used.

And I think it might be the same with disclosing the whole system behind 
the site to turn away some script kiddies maybe.
