 Ah, so you want MU to serve the 404 page when requesting a PHP file that
 doesn't exist?

 As jdub said, MU has to handle more complex URLs, so it's not as easy as
 in WP. You can't just check if the file exists or not unfortunately. I'm
 not sure if this can be fixed.
