 WPMU needs the more complex wp-.* and .*\.php rules due to URLs like
 these:

 }}}

 Quite different to URLs like these:

 {{{
 http://example.com/wp-admin/
 http://example.com/xmlrpc.php
 }}}

 (which map to existing files/dirs in the web root)
