 Fresh install WPMU 2.7.1, no plugins.
 New blogs -- under sub-folders.
 Create a new blog, for example domain.com/john/
 Then enter non existing URL: domain.com/john/do-not-exist

 The returned HTTP status code is 200 and the page loads template
 /themes/default/page.php instead of 404.php with the code 404.

 The temporal fix was suggested by "tomgf" in
 http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/9458/page/2?replies=41
