Comment (by thornelawler):

I have (independently) got WPMU 2.7 running on my 'www.' domain. I have
not released my own instructions because I do mean to write up a proper
patch which adds switches on the 'setup' page and the site-config
'options' page, and is clean & safe.

I would not expect this to be relevant for subdomain-based WPMU sites. If
someone wants to have a subdomain-based blog called 'www', and that
doesn't work, that's between them and donncha. :)

In fact, I will put something like this under the new config switches:
they should grey out unless the site-type is set to subdomain.

They should also default to 'no-www', for backwards compatibility.

The case I'm interested in fixing is only the one where a site called
"www.something.or.other" has subdirectory-based WPMU on it, and removing
the 'www.' prefix isn't an option.

Note though that I presently have negative amounts of free time, so if you
feel inspired to write this patch yourself, please don't wait for me: Like
Captain Oates, I may be some time. :)
