Comment:

 In MU trunk this has been reverted and now it uses the same code as WP.

 This needs a serious amount of testing though. Set up some test plugins to
 switch blogs, post things, edit options, switch blogs again, do mad stuff.
 Use an object cache, use as many object caches as you can. memcached,
 file, etc.
