 Is the uploaded file accessible via:

 http://sub1.mydomain.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/x/files/2009/07/myimage.jpg

 (replacing x with the actual blog id of sub1.mydomain.com)?

 This will tell you if the file actually exists on the filesystem. If it
 does, there must be some kind of mod_rewrite problem that is breaking the
 translation from a /files/2009/07/myimage.jpg request to a /wp-
 content/blogs.dir/x/files/2009/07/ request.

 Can you paste the contents of your .htaccess file?

 Image uploads are working for me on my 2.8.2 install after upgrading from
 2.7.1.

 I don't use the date sorting for uploads though (ie my uploads go in
 /files/filename.jpg).
