 How does WordPress.com deal with this? I guess in their case it's probably
 unlikely that there are so many authors on a single blog.

 How does the normal edit post/page perform?

 Also, I would think this is a WordPress issue (not WPMU specific) so it
 should probably be raised at http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ instead.
