 I did some further testing:

 Firefox 2 and 3 on both mac and pc produce the IO error with the latest
 flash installed.

 IE7 on pc works fine

 Safari on Mac reports "WPMU only works without the port in the URL"

 Nothing fancy on the server - sles apache2/php5.2.4
