 I did not have NOBLOGREDIRECT set (didn't know that option existed). I set
 it and going to a page that doesn't exist on a blog results in redirecting
 to the page set for NOBLOGREDIRECT (but this was already being handled by
 404.php).

 With or without NOBLOGREDIRECT being set, going to a subdomain that
 doesn't exist always results in displaying the content from the homepage
 on that subdomain with a 200 ok header status.

 So, invalid pages - yes both 404.php and NOBLOGREDIRECT work as intended.
 Invalid subdomain - neither work. Php and mysql 5, apache 2.2. Pretty much
 a new, standard install all around.
