 Unfortunately it's harder than that because of hard coded http:// links.
 WordPress.com use https for a while and Ryan Boren had a big ass plugin
 that handled login, then changing all links to https:// as well as doing
 other stuff.

 You can definitely do it with a plugin but it's not easy. Also using https
 makes the backend very slow, as Firefox and perhaps other browsers don't
 cache https objects. Images, CSS and Javascript files all have to be
 downloaded again on each request.
