 I backed these changes out in [1150] because the changes should be made
 either in a plugin or in WordPress.org. Open a ticket in
 http://trac.wordpress.org/ to have your changes made.

 Have you seen http://codex.wordpress.org/Administration_Over_SSL ? There
 are a number of plugins mentioned there.
