Comment:

 I haven't had much time to investigate this further or track down the
 error. But I have some extra info:

 This error is not specific to the inline uploader. The filter that is
 applied when the post is saved seems to be doing this. Don't know how I
 missed that.

 The í character is not replaced, instead second byte seems to be removed.

 This error occurs in WP 2.2 when you are logged in as a non-admin user.
 The rest of the post text is cut off where the character is so the effect
 is actually worse.

 I will repost this in the WP trac.
