Comment:

 Since MU isn't entry level software, that is probably why you don't
 understand it.

 The way it is set up, is so that is can easily scale to multiple servers.
 Which, the million or so bloggers at wordpress.com have proven that
 scaling is essential, and this is so far the best implementation.
