 The "plus" icon is actually meaningful, for several reasons. It's a non-
 textual affordance that conveys the concept of "addition", which can help
 people working outside their native language more quickly identify the
 purpose of the link. Having supporting icons that are associated with text
 links is generally considered a helpful tool for understanding intent and
 purpose.

 I agree, however, that the comments icon is unhelpful. It could be useful
 as a supplemental icon, but on its own is not particularly meaningful.
