 Boy, this functionality would be enormously useful. I make a lot of use of
 the bp/bbp_register_template_stack functions in buddypress/bbpress, and it
 is very frustrating and limiting that the same isn't possible in WP in
 general.

 The register_block_template capabilities referenced in the previous
 comment don't seem like they would help with classic themes/non-blocks.
