 I'd appreciate some additional eyes on https://github.com/WordPress
 /wordpress-develop/pull/11325. I believe it solves for the cache
 invalidation issues in this ticket and #64916 without introducing any API
 changes.

 While I think a custom table approach is a better long-term solution, I
 understand the hesitancy from hosts and others. With an off-by-default
 stance in 7.0, I think we can provide a "feature preview" storage
 mechanism powered by post meta and work towards an improved approach in
 the future.
