Comment:

 I agree with @sabernhardt that it's probably best (and necessary) to make
 any changes within the translations themselves. The challenges with making
 these types of changes to translatable strings are significant,
 particularly when you consider that the translations that could be lost
 might *already* have solved the issue for the user.
