 At Human Made we maintain [https://github.com/humanmade/authorship a
 plugin called Authorship] which is a modern replacement for Co-Authors
 Plus and others. The readme file includes a bunch of information about the
 design decisions, in particular storing author information in taxonomy
 terms, the REST API, WP-CLI, etc.

 I believe this is the most appropriate and most scalable architecture for
 multiple author attribution.
