Comment:

 Refreshed patch based on nacin's original approach. For single-site
 installs, wp_upgrade() now runs inline in admin.php instead of redirecting
 to upgrade.php. Users land directly on their intended page with a
 dismissible success admin notice. Multisite flow is unchanged.
