 Hi @dingo_d, thanks for the report. It looks like you're correct about the
 current screen being unavailable during the ajax request. I think what you
 called a workaround is the intended way for this to work. That is to say,
 a separate callback for each taxonomy.

 Since this has been open for 7 years with no extra reports, and since you
 have a solution, I'm going to close this ticket to help clean up Trac.
 Feel free to continue discussion or reopen if you think this should be
 addressed.
