 Hi @macbookandrew,

 I have just taken a quick look into this, and we now have the
 `wp_update_user` filter which whilst is implemented slightly different to
 your own patch, looks to achieve the same. This was added in 6.3.0 so a
 good while after your request, as I believe 4.8.6 would have been the
 current release back when you submitted this.

 As this request appears to be resolved now within WordPress, I am going to
 mark this ticket with the `close` tag. However if you believe there is
 still more conversation to be had, please reopen this ticket. 😃
