 In the meantime I could solve my problems. It appears that after the
 recent wordpress update last tuesday there was a conflict between the
 plugin 'Theme My Login' and probably the wordpress core. User
 authorisations were no longer correctly handled which resulted in the
 error message "Update not successful. The link you are using is no longer
 active. Please try again.".

 With the plugin 'Query Monitor' I could see that the error message was
 initiated by the mentioned plugin above. Fortunatelly I could still
 activate and deactivate plugins (but not update).
 So deactivating that conflicting plugin enabled me to update it to the
 just released new version.
 After activating the new plugin version the previous errors were resolved.
