 took a pass at adding support for the `per_page` parameter to the
 autosaves route and changing the preload to only load a single autosave in
 https://github.com/WordPress/wordpress-develop/pull/7555.

 What do you think? Can you give that a test and see if it resolves the
 issue you were experiencing?
