 Thanks for the summary, @joemcgill!

 I'm going to prepare PRs for the following solutions:

 A. Expose/consume this data via themes endpoint for the current active
 theme, as suggested by @TimothyBlynJacobs.
 B. Revert data consumption to editor settings. This is just in case plan A
 is rejected, and we need something 100% functional for WP 6.8.
